Hello 2017!!

We are 3 days into 2017 and I’ve seen both how far I’ve come over the last year…and I’ve also seen how some habits  die hard!

Last year when I was blogging at A Kinder Way I wrote a long resolution post. I can report that I can check off each resolution as a miss! 😉 I planned SO much. Set such lofty goals…that I set myself up for failure.

This year, there were no resolutions. Nope. Not going down that road anymore. BUT I did decide to take on 3 month long commitments and to set up my life on a course for change. Two of those commitments are perfect for me. One of them shows that I still have some learning to do as far as being realistic. There is NO beating myself up here. Just a realization that I need to be more thoughtful in my personal expectations.

The 3 commitments

1. Love Your Life in 30 Days Project by Mike Dooley over at the magnificent Notes From The Universe (anyone else get this daily email? Love it!) This is a free 30 day project that you can still join today. Did I say it’s FREE.  Well it’s FREE! There is a book that you can buy to use as your guide and journal, but it’s absolutely not needed. There is an awesome and very active facebook group that you will have access to once you sign up and while most people are on day 3…you can jump in anytime. The activities take less than 10 minutes so it’s not a huge time commitment. Although I’m betting you will be thinking about it all day if you’re anything like me! 😉

2. The Minimalist Game. (Minsgame) Described here on Break The Twitch

If you are not up for a video…the concept is easy. Each day starting on day 1 you throw out, recycle or donate an item(s) in your home. Day 1…1 item. Day 2….2 items. Day 3….3 items. and so on. At the end of 31 days you will have purged 496 things from your house. We are working in our garage first. It’s our dump-all place and there are SO many things that have been there for years and years and we never even think of them. Both me and Steve are doing this so when we are done this house will be 992 things less cluttered. WHAT? Yup.

And lastly (and also where old habits die hard)

3. 31 Day Yoga Revolution with Yoga With Adriene.

I have a deep desire to be great at Yoga. The problem is…I want to be great NOW. I want to be able to do ALL the things Adriene can do and it’s not humanly possible to start of at that point. I hurt myself because I insist on keeping up. I haven’t practiced yoga daily for months and prior to that I never practiced it daily period. I am not in a place physically where I can do this every single day without hurting my body which then stops all practice. SO my new plan is to not put a number of days on it, but to practice Yoga With Adriene at my own pace as often as possible. Building up a practice slowly that allows my body to keep up with my desire for yogi-level-awesomeness! More on this later!

I feel really happy and excited to be taking part in these 3 things. I’ll update as the month goes on and I did take BEFORE pictures of my messy and overflowing garage, so look for that at the end of the month.

I hope you’re having a good New Year so far and I’d love to read your opinions on resolutions and or what yours are in the comments below!

Thanks for Reading!

  1. Keeping my resolutions modest this year. I think my main one will be to listen more and speak less, and my second will be to go easier on myself creatively, as I felt rather burned out after last year. Good luck with yours. 🙂 The decluttering sounds a great plan. I always felt freer after doing that.

    1. Thank you Eleanor. I really needed to cut back this year. Obviously I still need to learn that lesson (the yoga) but at least I saw the error of my ways early on! 😉
I’m glad to hear that you will be easier on yourself creatively. Writing in particular can be very draining and demanding…no need to add to that by burning ourselves out with expectations.
I miss your blog by the way. Not trying to be demanding. 😉 I just miss reading your thoughts. 🙂 ❤

      1. I’ve had no real thoughts for the blog, I’m afraid. It all seems so repetitive, and I don’t like to keep things up just for the sake of them. Haven’t made any decision to retire it, though. Will just take it as it comes.

    2. I just remembered that I never finished reading through your blog. I think I told you once that I was going to start at the beginning and read your story. I think it’s time for me to get back on there. You may see some new comments on old posts! 😉

  2. These are absolutely wonderful ideas Nikki. Once more you and I are on the same wavelength as only yesterday I was culling magazines and decluttering some spaces in my home. I’ll have to look into the other links as well. Like you I’ve not made any resolutions but am taking little steps in making changes to my every day routines. Happy new year my dear friend. May 2017 be a very happy one for you and your family. xo

    1. It doesn’t surprise me to read that we are on the same wave Miri. Seems to be a pattern huh? I will be embarrassed to show my before pics of my garage. It’s ridiculous. But so far we have thrown out 12 things…all trash worthy! 😉

I loved your latest blog about your camping trip. It’s so cold and miserable here right now that it was like a mini vacation. 🙂 Happy New Year to you and yours as well. ❤

      1. Oh Nikki, don’t be embarrassed. Our garage is probably just as bad. It has so much crap in it, our daughters horse tack stuff, hay, tools, you name it. Sounds as though you’ve got off to a great start.
Happy new year to you as well dear friend. Stay warm. xo

  3. What an uplifting post. Full of acceptance & self-care. I love how you wrote: “There is NO beating myself up here. Just a realization that I need to be more thoughtful in my personal expectations.” Amen to being reasonable & kind to oneself. Happy New Year! May your 2017 be filled with peace & abundance.🍃🌷

    1. Thank you so much Andrea! Happy New Year to you as well.
I used to be a beater upper but that is such wasted energy. I can’t spare that anymore. Too busy building a better life! 😉 It stinks when we can’t quite reach the place we want to be at the moment we want to be there, but my hope is that it will all the more sweeter when I get there. 🙂

  4. I love your thoughtful ideas for your new year. No resolutions for me, the moment they are out of mouth I forget I said them. Currently having a major clearout, so got that one covered. Trying the Skinny Love hcg diet program too. Feeling good and have shed more than I expected. So it’s all going well so far. I wish you well in your three monthly commitments.

    1. Thank you Barbara! I’m the same way. Last year I set so many I felt like a failure within a week! 😉 That’s no way to start the year.
Gotta love that clearing out! I’m having a great time with it so far. Congrats on the weight loss….Yay!! ❤

    1. Yes! I follow Adriene on Youtube. Her channel is called Yoga With Adriene. She’s fantastic. The only reason I will be comfortable showing the before pictures of our garage is because I will be able to show off how great it looks. It’s ridiculously messy. Imagine a junk drawer…the size of a garage. Yikes! 🙂

  5. NIKKI I LOVE THIS! You go, girl. The 3 month commitment sounds like a perfect amount of time…. just enough to make a lasting change without so much that it feels overwhelming.

I also acknowledge you for sticking with your yoga commitment, even though you haven’t done it yet the way that you like. Trust your heart that you’ll find a way to support yourself however that really works for you.

Lots of blessings to your 2017, my friend. Hope all goes great with the garage 🙂
ps – I may be committing to a program for forgiving coaching. Please keep it in your prayers. Thanks my friend.

    1. Oh Debbie that sounds wonderful. Please keep me posted. ❤ I will send positive vibes my friend. Thank you for your support here…means so much to me. The yoga thing was a hard pill to swallow but I can't allow myself to either…hurt myself…or beat myself up. Nope. None of that in 2017! ❤

  6. LOVE these, I am always coming back to yoga and cycling through our house. With the kids I try to have a Montessori approach in our home. If something does not have a purpose it does not need to be there. We don’t need to have stuff just to have stuff.
    Happy New Year!!!

  7. I don’t make resolutions anymore. All I plan to do is try to lose some weight, do my best, and hopefully get my blood sugars under control. Anything else is just icing on my low carb non-fat cake. 🙂

I'd love to read your thoughts!
